Over the past few decades, the field of Colonial Latin American Studies has experienced a rich and productive renewal. The implementation of valuable theoretical advances and modern methods of analysis has given rise to original and innovative interpretations of ancient texts. Such is the case with the present work by José Antonio Mazzotti which examines the Royal Commentaries (1609 and 1617) of the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, a masterpiece of Latin American literature and Incan historiography. Mazzotti´s study sets forth a new and alternative reading of this foundational text, paying close attention to the indigenous sources and Andean resonance of a work that has served as the basis for many interpretations of Latin American identity.
